Confessions of a Chatty Baby: How Baby Sign Language Helps Me Communicate

Why Sign Language?

I know I can’t talk yet, but I still have a lot to say! Baby sign language gives me a way to share what I need, feel, and see even before I can speak. When you teach me baby signs like milk, more, or all done, you’re making my world a lot less frustrating for both of us. And did you know? Babies who learn sign language can often speak earlier and have better language skills later on. Baby sign language is a powerful tool for early communication and helps build autonomy and self-esteem!

When to Start Teaching Me Signs?

You might be wondering when to start teaching baby sign language. Beginning around 6 months I will likely start mimicking hand motions and this can be an ideal time to start, but even if I’m a little younger and am just watching you intently, I can start learning to recognize the signs! Keep in mind, I might need a couple of months of practice to start signing back to you. Anytime during our routines, like feeding, playing, or even diaper changes, is a great time to introduce new signs. Remember, I’m soaking up everything like a little sponge!

How to Teach Baby Sign Language: CPR Method

Teaching me baby sign language doesn’t have to be complicated. Just keep these three letters in mind: CPR – Consistency, Persistence, and Repetition.

  • Consistency: Use the same signs every day, especially during activities when I’m calm and focused. For example, if I see the milk sign each time you offer it, I’ll start connecting the sign to the milk I love!

  • Persistence: Learning takes time! Sometimes I may seem like I’m ignoring you, but I’m just processing. Keep at it with a smile, and I’ll be excited to respond when I’m ready.

  • Repetition: Just like with anything new, the more I see you make the sign, the quicker I’ll pick it up. Repeating signs during daily routines like mealtimes and play helps make them stick. Bonus points if you use signs with my siblings and other adults in my life!
